Rain Series I

I started to notice the rain pouring down the windows during an exceptional thunder storm.

The rivulets were running irregularly making patterns on the window. I took some photos that were focused on the windowpane. The resulting photos showed the rain in focus and the view out of the window was blurred. I used the photos as a basis for the ‘Rain Series’.
The idea that the subject was the rain, and one’s eyes were continually drawn back to the window surface seemed to parallel the painting process, and at times the painted rain turned into abstract marks.
This series of work was an attempt to make paintings that weren’t about distant places, exotic locations etc. but to work from nearby immediate settings. A more everyday approach to subject matter that wasn’t immediately interesting.
